Larry Rodbell has built a reputation as a versatile and musical drummer, educator, clinician, and live performer. With over 35 years playing experience and 20 plus years teaching, Larry approaches everything with passion, enthusiasm and integrity.
Larry's teaching style makes learning music an enjoyable experience for students of all ages and skill levels. Spend some time with Larry and you’ll quickly notice he takes the anxiety out of learning to play a challenging instrument, while ensuring his students are afforded the highest quality musical instruction. Larry has an eclectic musical background and can easily relate to students interested in focusing on specific genres. Larry’s teaching philosophy is to instill confidence in his students, as this is a key ingredient to healthy learning and growth as a musician. This provides students with the tools for their own musical self-expression.
Larry has been teaching at RodbellDrums studio (est. 2000) located in Annapolis, MD and Music & Arts Center in Severna Park, MD since 1997. He has been the drum coach for the Magothy River Middle School concert band percussion section since 2011 and started as percussion ensemble director in 2014 . Larry is also very active in the community. He offers his instructional services at charity events and his signature workshops to local elementary, middle and high schools every spring and fall. His programs include: “Practice S.M.A.R.T.” (Senses, Meter, Accents, Rudiments and Technique), “Textures & Tones” (listening and being creative), and “Connecting the Dots” (interesting and fun ways to use a method book).
Larry has been on the panel of judges and the drum sponsor for the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands held annually at Maryland Hall in Annapolis, where the top high school bands in the County showcase their talents; 2012, 2013 and 2014. He has also served as a judge for The Guitar Center Drum Off in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Larry has entertained crowds large and small from coast to coast and recorded with a variety of different bands and artists ranging from Rock, Funk, Blues, R&B, Jazz, and more. He currently performs with his Trio and stays busy with freelance and studio work.
Larry is a member of the Percussive Arts Society and the Vic Firth Education Team. He proudly plays and endorses Ludwig drums and Atlas pro hardware, Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks and brushes, Remo drum heads and world percussion, Humes & Berg cases, ProLogix practice pads and Drumtacs. In 2016 Larry was selected to be a part of the Percussive Arts Society Drumset Committee.
